Dear Antonio Munoz Molina,
We are Israeli citizens who support Palestinian civil society's call for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel. We believe that if you accept the Jerusalem prize next month in Jerusalem, you will be complicit in Israel's human rights crimes and its "business as usual" policy. We would like to provide you with some information so that you can make an informed decision as to whether you wish to collaborate with Israel’s racism and apartheid regime.
By accepting the Jerusalem prize, you will legitimise the actions of Jerusalem's racist mayor, Nir Barkat, who pursues and defends the expulsion of Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem, in order for them to be occupied by Jewish settlers. Right now, the Shamasneh family from the east East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarah is facing a violent eviction from their home. In addition, just ten minutes away from the book fair venue, children in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan are abducted from their homes, detained and even tortured by Israeli police acting in the service of Israeli settlers. Mayor Nir Barkat bears responsibility for these crimes!
Furthermore, you are expected to receive the prize from President Shimon Peres, who has been a member of and a senior propagandist for Israeli governments which have used cluster munitions, flechette artillery shells, and white phosphorus bombs in densely populated civilian areas in Gaza and Lebanon. These governments have also increased the number of settlements in the OPT and imposed separate legal systems for Israeli settlers in the OPT and their Palestinian neighbors. Furthermore, in September 1986, Shimon Peres authorized the kidnapping and ill-treatment of an Israeli citizen in Rome (Mr. Mordechai Vanunu, who objects to Israeli nuclear power) - a clear violation of international law. As Prime Minister, in April 1996, Shimon Peres also authorized the mass bombing of villages in Southern Lebanon, explicitly aimed at creating a wave of refugees flooding Beirut.
As previously mentioned, the call to boycott the Jerusalem book fair is not based only on the identity of the senior politicians who will attend it. The book fair is an important propaganda occasion, aimed to promote Israel’s image and present it as a patron of book publishing and the arts in general, at the expense of victims of its human rights violations!
Please say no to Nir Barkat, Shimon Peres and the Jerusalem literature prize.
Sincerely,
Boycott! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within (Boycott from Within)
